Evolução, História e Subjetividade Coletiva

Este artigo analisa as diversas concepções vigentes na Sociologia contemporânea quanto à relação entre evolução social e história. Focaliza-se três correntes: o funcionalismo e o neofuncionalismo, de Parsons a Alexander; o "historismo" inglês, de Gellner, Giddens e Mann; e o estruturalismo genético alemão de Habermas a Eder. Mostra-se como crescentemente a questão da contingência histórica e o papel das coletividades abriram caminho dentro das teorias evolutivas, até mesmo de forma exagerada, inclusive no plano do desenvolvimento cognitivo e moral. Recusa-se um pan-selecionismo neodarwiniano duro, mas critica-se também a recusa total da teoria da evolução pelas correntes historistas. O artigo conclui com um balanço analítico das questões atuais, dos impasses daquelas abordagens, e propõe caminhos possíveis para o avanço na direção de uma teoria da evolução, capaz de lidar com a contingência histórica, de forma multilinear. Estágios evolutivos poderiam assim aparecer juntos a uma análise ampla dos mecanismos da evolução, nos quais a criatividade social e a interação entre subjetividades coletivas mostram-se bastante importantes, sem prejuízo de múltiplas lógicas de desenvolvimento.

The article analyzes contemporary sociology's conceptions regarding the relationship between social evolution and history, focusing on three streams of thought: functionalism and neo-functionalism, from Parsons to Alexander; the British "historicism" of Gellner, Giddens, and Mann; and German genetic structuralism from Habermas to Eder. It demonstrates how the question of historical contingency and the role of collectivities have steadily made space for themselves within evolutionary theories — even in an exaggerated fashion and at the level of cognitive and moral development; a rigid neo-Darwinian pan-selectionism is rejected while historicism's outright rejection of the theory of evolution is also criticized. The article closes with an analytical evaluation of current issues and of the impasses found in these approaches, and suggests ways to move towards a theory of evolution able to take historical contingency into account in multilinear fashion. Evolutionary stages could thus appear alongside a broad analysis of the mechanisms of evolution, wherein social creativity and interaction among collective subjectivities prove quite important.

Partindo da discussão da trajetória da Sociologia do Trabalho em três países onde a disciplina mais se desenvolveu, e analisando as transformações por que vem passando o trabalho no atual contexto mundial de reestruturação, o artigo discute as principais tendências teóricas que se vêm difundindo na área. Os limites das análises, que restringem seu campo de estudo aos aspectos materiais e tecnológicos da questão, são sublinhados, ao mesmo tempo em que se destaca sua incapacidade de levar em conta os graves problemas sociais que se vêm colocando para as sociedades atuais. Um dos eixos da discussão é a noção de determinismo tecnológico, tema considerado ainda central para o avanço da disciplina.

Based on both a discussion of the history of labor sociology in the three nations where it has enjoyed greatest development and on an analysis of labor transformations within the current world context of the restructuring of production, the article discusses the main theoretical trends within this field. The limitations of analyses whose scope is restricted to study of the material and technological aspects of the question are underscored, along with their incapacity to take into account the serious social problems currently facing today's societies. One of the main threads of this discussion is the notion of technological determinism, a topic deemed central to further progress within this field.

Discute-se aqui a necessidade de um enfoque interativo entre as abordagens estruturais e intencionais na sociologia norte-americana das revoluções sociais modernas. Entre 1913 e 1994, os modelos analisados vão desde os primeiros trabalhos da chamada História Natural da Revolução e da Psicologia das Multidões, até desafios recentes tais como a Nova História Cultural, a Teoria da Escolha Racional e a Nova Sociologia do Desenvolvimento, passando pelos trabalhos "clássicos" da área, oriundos da Psicologia Social, do Funcionalismo, das Teorias do Conflito Político e da Sociologia Histórica. Sustenta, ao final, que os trabalhos de Charles Tilly e Theda Skocpol representam um esforço teórico ainda não superado de explicação do fenômeno revolucionário moderno.

The article discusses the need for an interactive focus comparing the structural and intentional approaches found in US sociology on modern social revolutions. Covering the period from 1913 to 1994, analyzed models range from initial works within the so-called natural history of the revolution and crowd psychology to such recent challenges as the new cultural history, rational-choice theory, and the new sociology of development. The article encompasses as well the area's "classic" studies deriving from social psychology, functionalism, political conflict theory, and historical sociology. It is argued that in accounting for the modern revolutionary phenomenon, Charles Tilly's and Theda Skocpol's works constitute a theoretical contribution not yet surpassed.

O artigo objetiva apresentar as principais linhas de interpretação a respeito do positivismo no Brasil, desde seu aparecimento entre nós até as análises mais recentes. Pretendo mostrar que a bibliografia especializada se dividiu em três grandes ondas explicativas, sendo as duas primeiras muito influenciadas pela história oficial do positivismo brasileiro, o que as levou a cometer equívocos na avaliação do movimento no Brasil. As análises mais recentes, por outro lado, têm atentado para a integração do positivismo brasileiro e percebido a impossibilidade de tratá-lo de forma monolítica. Observa, ainda, o caráter cismático do movimento e a necessidade de abordá-lo levando em conta sua inserção no contexto político, econômico e intelectual, ressaltando seu ímpeto modernizador — muito embora seja, na origem, uma ideologia conservadora.

The article describes the main lines of interpretation regarding positivism in Brazil, from its initial emergence to more recent analyses. It intends to show that the specialized bibliography can be divided into three mayor explanatory waves, the first two highy influenced by the official history of Brazilian positivism and thus liable to errors in their evaluation of the movement in Brazil. More recent analyses, on the other hand, have moved towards the integration of Brazilian positivism, realizing it cannot be dealt with in monolithic fashion. Attention is also called to the schismatic nature of this movement and the need to approach it by taking into account its role within the overall political, economic, and intellectual context, emphasizing its modernizing momentum — much as in its origins it is a conservative ideology.
